Social Media

At one point in my late teens social media played a vital role in my life I felt that I needed to be on Facebook every second in the day. During this time period in my late high school someone began to cyber bully me and I didn't know who it was. Around this time fake pages were very popular and there was obviously someone behind this page, they would literally comment on every single status I made and picture I posted. This mysterious would say mean things like "No one likes you" or "Your ugly" It really bothered me being that I was pretty much a quite person and stayed to myself. After this continued on for  about a month I found myself disconnecting from Facebook for two months and I deleted that entire page and created a new one. Luckily there has not been anymore mysterious persons added on my page. Ever since that happened I just found myself adding people who were family or friends and it still is like that til this day. I can say that ever since that happened I don't find myself being on social media, I find myself using it mainly when I am bored so I have cut back a lot on my social media I just find myself browsing through here and there I can say I check my social media around 2 tow 3 times a day and that is about it I mainly just check notifications for events or articles. I really feel that social media is mainly used to see what is going on in others lives whether we keep in contact with them or not.  I am not for sure if the full usage of social media will be positive or improve interpersonal relationships because there can be a lot of misinterpretation of communication and that can cause a lot of problems.

Unplugging from Social Media,

OMG! In the beginning I thought this was going to be a hard task for me, having to not use any of my social media accounts for a whole day but it really wasn't  instead I really enjoyed it. I feel that it was easy for me being that I only social media to find out news and articles, I am barely on any social media anyways being that I have other major responsibilities. Believe it or not I am very surprised about the results I even found myself forgetting to re upload my Facebook and snap chat apps. Another good outcome from me deleting social media for a day was  how it helped me recognize that all of the friends I found myself communicating with through Facebook and Snap chat still kept in contact with me via phone calls and text messages.  I am actually reconsidering deleting them in the near future.

Comm 303 has been a very interesting class and I can say that I learned a great deal of information in regards to communication technology it has taught me to look at some technology in a different way. What  really stood out to me the most throughout the semester was the portion about television, I say this because I never really thought how much communication is depicted through T.V. Learning how much the television has changed over the years and the historical background really caught my attention. The course overall has made me aware of my daily interaction with communication technology and has kind of made want to reduce my usage of certain communication technology like mobile internet and social media. I really enjoyed this course and I can say that I am taking with me a great deal of knowledge.

Data Collection

For a long time I never really felt that providing information via the web was a problem until one of my aunts had her identity stole. Once I learned how quick her life changed because someone committed fraudulent transactions through her bank account it really open my eyes. However, I have not officially took thee time out to actually purchase software ta helps protect me fully I am very cautious of what information I do provide with companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook. I do not put private information on my Facebook.  When it comes to my social media usage I can say that I have in the past posted locations just out of excitement, however I try my best not to leave location services on my cell phone turned on.  The first time logged on social networking sites I never took the time to read the "privacy policy" and even till this day I still skim.  After reading the excerpts " The Price of Free: How Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google Sell you to Advertisers" it lets me know that my Apple ID is pretty much protected versus what I search n google.  I always had a curiosity about how  Companies like google gain profit and it is through selling my information. With google being the most used search engine I do feel that we as citizens should have big concerns about this. Identity theft can be  a dangerous situation and what if the information get s into the wrong hands.  Big Brother is very important in our lives and need to be aware of what is really going on with our own private information.

Video Games

In todays society video games are very important they play a big part in both political, economical, and social. Video games have been a great passage time., they are very entertaining and can offer a virtual reality. There are may different arguments facing whether they are positive or negative. However I feel that video games does have pros and cons. A few cos f video games may be, o being the simple fact that they are fun and are a great entertainment pass time, its a good social activity whether its in person or virtual, or can help with education. On the other hand some cons can be one they can be addictive, video games are nit a substitute to physical activity, and exposure to violence. Growing up I enjoyed playing games like The Sims, Grand Theft Auto or sonic, to me these games were very fun to me and I enjoyed them. The Sims was more of a virtual reality which help me be in control of my own person. Grand Theft Auto was very fun to me based off the fact that I had free will in a virtual world to basically do anything I want it was a very violent game. Sonic was more of an action game which involved very minimum violence to me. In Chapter 15 of the textbook video game violence is brought up in a very serious manner by the legislation to were their have been an investigation of video game violence and kids being exposed to it leading to criminal activity. Personally I feel that there can be some very explicit content that should not be viewable to kids and can agree with the legislation that there should be reevaluation of the content on video games. With this being said I feel that video games are here to stay and can only advance right along with other communication technology.

The first time I recall using s computer was when I was elementary school I was in the second grade and we had designated days were we would go and visit the computer lab, on Wednesday to be exact. When using the computers we weren't allowed to browse the web. We were only allowed to access provided educational content When I got in 5th grade however we were free to surf the web but of course with limited content. I would like to say that it was the first time I actually u44sed the internet. My first computer was a old off white large in size desktop. It was very heavy and it took two people to carry it up the stairs.  We didn't have any internet at the time nor any software content the only major  use if the computer came from playing games. With this being said the graphics were just horrible and so it was barely used for that. When it comes to PCs my first actual laptop was back in 2011. I was pretty late into the game of personal computers. Up until then I never had a need for a personal computer. The biggest mistake I made with my computer had to be downloading things such as music apps like limewire I shouldn't have done that because it caused my laptop to get viruses and in doing so my computer crashed. Although that was the death of my computer I did have some good runs with it I was able to type papers and documents needed for school and research material. Even though I didn't take care of my first laptop I still found myself purchasing them because they have been very beneficial to my everyday life and education. I have been able to accomplish so much through computers and the internet. Because of laptops I have been able to make online purchases and take online classes. Computers and the internet have been two of the greatest inventions ever.

A Blog About Blogging!!

Blogging can have  its pros and its cons. Having the ability to exercise your first amendment right is awesome. Being able to say what you want is such a wonderful right that we in America have been granted the permission to do. However there is a time and place when things that you have the ability to say shouldn't be said.  Blogging is essential to providing feedback, or simply just to speak your mind about whatever you want because you feel the need too. There are limits I feel that comes with blogging, tings such as harassing, belittling or starting rumors that can hurt someone is an exception to the freedom of blogging . In today society the easy access if blogging is starting to rise. I feel that it does have an impact on today's society as a whole. Blogs travel very fast, just as quick as a tweet, or even a Facebook status update. In the article written by Kathleen Parker entitled "Whispering Campaigns Can Take Flight in New Media" gives a wonderful example of how quickly  blogs can travel. She writes in the article about blogs and states

"All of this happened between 12:52 p.m., when the blog post went online, and 1:12 p.m., when a reporter for USA Today decided to call Haley’s office and ask if the story was true. But the rumor was re-tweeted at 1:14 by a Washington Post reporter and picked up by Daily Kos and The Daily Caller. By 3:29, The Drudge Report linked to the Daily Caller article featuring the headline: “Report: DOJ may indict SC Gov. Nikki Haley for tax fraud.” This is a prime example of the effects of one persons opinion can be spread in a mater of minutes. With this being said I do feel that blogs will become more popular in the near future because it gives us one more way to use our first amendment at our own free will, however there should be limitations on false reporting, harassing and other harmful messages. They should be monitored by Gatekeepers and when something is harmful it should be removed.

Theory and Television

For my theory choice I have chosen Social Learning Theory/Social Cognitive Theory, this theory I feel plays a valuable role in technology today, television being one. When it comes to television it has changed over tie in various ways. In todays time flat screen TV's are very popular. it was a dramatic change from the box TV. However when it as first released it was very expensive, especially for the average American. However once the price was lowered then they began to sale. The social aspect comes from the communication whether through word of mouth, seeing others who have purchased the flat screen TV, commercials or what not influencing to buy the new television. For example when a person visits a family members home and they watch how that member interacts and navigates there new television set they ay find the influence to go out and purchase a flat screen television. Social theory has been a major contribution to the initial rise of technology. With this being said I do feel that this will help both the consumer as well as the corporate companies no what the next step should be with television. It has not been long since the flat panel TV has been out, as well as other  components that have came with the rise of television such as HD and LCD. We are now seeing the curved television as well. Television will not just be limited to a screen, it can only get better from this point. And once again the social aspect will come into play once new material is introduce and becomes common then it will be seen in numerous homes.
